A painter of the late Edo period. The year of birth and death is unknown. It is said that he was based in Edo. His name is Kan, his common name is Shuntaro, and his pseudonym is Yosetsu.

with signature 'Torin' 董琳 and seal 'Torin no in' 董琳之印
Rather than relying on dramatic contrast, this hanging scroll draws the viewer in through restraint, presenting a nocturnal plum tree rendered with calm precision and an emphasis on atmosphere rather than spectacle; the pale blossoms seem to hover quietly against the muted background, their presence suggested as much by negative space as by brushwork, evoking the stillness of an Edo-period night when scent and silence outweigh visual brilliance, and reflecting the refined taste for seasonal poetry that characterized educated circles of the time; the work is attributed to Abe Torin, an artist active in Edo during the first half of the nineteenth century, whose paintings favor subtle rhythm and balance over overt flourish, and it remains preserved with its accompanying wooden storage box, offering a complete and authentic presentation of a classical Japanese hanging scroll.
