Description
Gold Lacquerware Black Polished Makie Silver-Rimmed Tray Old Pine Tree and Cranes, Bamboo with Box VB250
黒研出蒔絵 Kurotogidashimakie
This is a traditional Japanese lacquer art technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled over a pattern drawn in black lacquer, then the entire surface is coated with another layer of lacquer to completely cover the powder. Once dry, the surface is polished with charcoal to reveal the design.
銀縁 Ginbuchi
A design or technique in which the rims of trays, bowls, boxes and other items are adorned with silver-coloured or sterling silver decorations. The deep, inky black of the lacquer contrasts beautifully with the subdued, elegant lustre of the silver, creating a sophisticated, modern Japanese aesthetic.
A refined example of Japanese lacquerware executed in kuro-togidashi maki-e, this elegant tray presents a tranquil composition of an old pine tree and a group of cranes, rendered in softly glowing gold against a deep black ground, with delicate bamboo elements adding further seasonal nuance; the design embodies auspicious symbolism associated with longevity, resilience, and harmony, themes long appreciated within classical Japanese aesthetics and particularly favoured in samurai culture; the surface is carefully polished to reveal the design from within the lacquer layers, creating a subtle depth and quiet luminosity characteristic of the technique, while the silver-rimmed edge (ginbuchi) provides a restrained yet refined contrast to the dark lacquer ground; accompanied by an old storage box bearing an inscription referring to “Rōshō gunkaku (old pine and cranes)” maki-e, together with an old attribution slip mentioning names of samurai families such as Inaba Iyo-no-kami and Toda Uneme-no-shō, adding a further layer of historical atmosphere to the piece.
