A Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk who flourished during the Meiji and Taisho eras. He was the 486th abbot of Daitoku-ji and also served as the head of the Daitoku-ji school.

This compelling Zen hanging scroll by Sohan Genpo (1848–1922), a prominent Rinzai monk and 486th abbot of Daitoku-ji, features a bold calligraphic rendering of Bodhidharma (Daruma)—the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism. The composition combines expressive brushwork with spiritual symbolism, centering on a powerful inscription and an enso-like circular stroke that evokes the void, enlightenment, and the immediacy of awakened presence.
