This hanging scroll depicts Horai (Penglai), the legendary isle of immortals from Chinese mythology, long associated with longevity and auspicious blessings. A solitary pine tree, rendered in quiet ink tones, symbolizes endurance and spiritual vitality, resonating with Zen ideals of simplicity and contemplation. The inscription “Horai” (蓬莱) reinforces the auspicious nature of the subject. The work is by Adachi Taidō (born 1937), a Zen priest of the Daitoku-ji lineage, and is signed “Zen Daitoku Taidō sō” (前大徳泰道 叟) with the seal “Shūsei” (宗誠). The scroll is preserved with its original tomobako (wooden storage box), inscribed by the artist, confirming authenticity and proper provenance.
