狩野永悳 Kano Eitoku (1815-1891)
A Japanese painter of the Kano school active from the late Edo period through the Meiji era. He was the Six son of Kano Isen-in Naganobu, the sixth-generation head of the Kano family of Kobikichō. His real name was Tatsunobu; his childhood name was Kumagoro, and he also went by the pseudonym Seisetsusai. In 1848, he became an official court painter to the shogunate.

As the moment seems to open between night and dawn, the dragon begins its ascent across Mount Fuji, its form emerging through shifting ink tones that suggest both movement and the passing of time. In this hanging scroll by Kano Eitoku (1815–1891), the great peak rises in a pale wash while the dragon arcs above it with a presence that feels both ancient and immediate. Eitoku—sixth son of Kano Isen‑in Naganobu and an official painter to the shogunate—brings the disciplined clarity of the Kano school to this dynamic theme, balancing bold outlines with soft gradations that let the scene breathe. His inscription “Eitoku Fujiwara Tatsunobu hitsu” and seal “Tatsunobu” appear with measured confidence, anchoring the composition without interrupting its upward sweep.
