Japanese painter. Born in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. His real name is Atsushi. His wife, Matsubayashi Settei, is also a Japanese painter. He is often referred to as ‘the last literati painter,’ and his work is characterised by meticulous and straightforward depictions rooted in the tradition of Watanabe Kazan and Tsubaki Chinzan, while fully incorporating the popular style of modern sketching. His work is distinguished by a refined style underpinned by his knowledge of Chinese classics and poetry.

Painted in the spring of 1924, this hanging scroll by Matsubayashi Keigetsu (1876–1963) presents a quietly contemplative still life that embodies the spirit of modern literati painting at its most refined.
