Ukiyoe artist and Japanese-style painter of the Meiji era. Studied under Kawanabe Kyosai. Trained in the techniques of the Kano school and specialized in landscapes and portraits. He won prizes at numerous art exhibitions.

A quiet tension unfolds across this hanging scroll as a pale full moon emerges from a field of warm, softly toned paper, its perfect circle framed by the sweeping curve of an aged pine trunk whose bark and needles are rendered with controlled, calligraphic brushwork. Rather than depicting a dramatic night scene, Tanaka Raishō allows stillness to dominate: the moon appears suspended in time, neither fully night nor day, while the pine seems to lean toward it in silent contemplation. The composition is spare yet deliberate, leaving generous negative space that enhances the sense of calm and introspection, a hallmark of refined Japanese aesthetics in the late Meiji period.
