西晴雲 Nishi Seiun (1882-1963)
Born in Oda City, Shimane Prefecture, he studied under 吉嗣拝山 Yoshitsugu Haizan (1846–1915). At the age of 33, he traveled to China, where he resided for thirty years; during this time, he looked to great masters of Chinese Nanga painting and calligraphy as his mentors, most notably studying Nanga painting under 呉昌碩 Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), a leading figure in the Shanghai art world.
