石井金陵 Ishii Kinryo (1842-1926)
Japanese painter of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Born in Okayama. Studied under 古市金峨 Furuichi Kinga (1805-1880) and 岡本秋暉 Okamoto Shuki (1807-1862). After visiting various places, he returned to his hometown Okayama and taught his many students. Moved to Osaka in 1903 and became an elder person in the Osaka literati painting circles.

This hanging scroll by Ishii Kinryo, created in 1901, presents a dramatic vision of a dragon rising through swirling clouds above a restless sea, a theme traditionally associated with power, transformation, and auspicious force. Active during the transition from the late Edo into the Meiji period, Ishii Kinryo worked within the classical ink-painting tradition while bringing a heightened sense of movement and atmospheric depth to his compositions. In this work, the dragon’s elongated form emerges dynamically from mist and waves, its upward motion reinforced by the vertical format and fluid ink washes. The contrast between the turbulent waters below and the expansive, drifting clouds above creates a strong sense of depth and momentum, guiding the viewer’s gaze upward through the scene. Executed at the beginning of the twentieth century and accompanied by a fitted storage box, the scroll reflects both the continuity of traditional imagery and the confident expressive energy characteristic of the Meiji era, resulting in a composition that is commanding, refined, and visually compelling.
