A pre-war Japanese painter. At the age of 17, he entered the private school of Kōno Burei of the Maruyama-Shijō school. He began to show promise from this time, and the following year became head of crafts at the private school, coming to be known as the foremost among the “Four Heavenly Kings of Burei” (referring to the four foremost disciples: Seiho, Tuji Kako, Taniguchi Kōkyō, and Kikuchi Hobun). A leading master representing the pre-war Kyoto art world. Imperial Household Artist. Recipient of the first Order of Culture.

This hanging scroll by Takeuchi Seiho (1864–1942) depicts a tender autumn scene with ripe persimmons and two small birds perched on a branch, rendered in soft pigments and elegant brushwork that reflect the refined naturalism of the Maruyama–Shijō school. Signed “Seiho ju” (栖鳳住), the work exemplifies Seiho’s mastery of seasonal expression and compositional balance. A leading figure in pre-war Kyoto painting circles, Seiho trained under Kōno Bairei and rose to prominence as one of the “Four Heavenly Kings of Bairei,” later becoming an Imperial Household Artist and the first recipient of the Order of Culture. The scroll has been carefully preserved in a storage box, indicating the care with which it has been maintained.
