酒井抱一 Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828)
Painter of the late Edo period. Founder of the Edo Rimpa school. From his youth, he widely practiced haiku, kyoka, Noh, and tea ceremonies. He first studied the Kano school of painting, then the ukiyoe style from Utagawa Toyoharu, the Shin Nanpin style from So Shiseki, and the Maruyama school and Tosa schools, but later became deeply attached to Ogata Korin and Ogata Kenzan. He developed his own style of painting while inheriting the decorative style of the Rimpa school.

A refined hanging scroll by Sakai Hōitsu, founder of the Edo Rimpa school and one of the most celebrated painters of the late Edo period. The composition features a flowering cretimus vine entwined with delicate foliage, accompanied by two small birds in gentle interaction—an elegant rendering of seasonal vitality and poetic charm. Signed Hoitsu hitsu (抱一 筆) and sealed Bunsen (文詮), the work exemplifies Hōitsu’s mastery of decorative rhythm, lyrical brushwork, and naturalistic detail. Having studied multiple schools—including Kano, Ukiyo-e, Shin Nanpin, Maruyama, and Tosa—Hōitsu ultimately embraced and revitalized the Rinpa tradition of Ogata Kōrin and Ogata Kenzan.
