This is a passage from classical Chinese texts such as the “Record of Learning at Jizhou”, which reads: “Take the Way as one's source and return to it as a friend”. It signifies making the Way (the teachings and fundamental principles one should follow as a human being) one's own source, and having friends who practise it (returning to them as friends), or regarding the Way itself as a friend and a place to return to (a place of refuge).

A Sōtō Zen Buddhist monk born in Tottori Prefecture. He received instruction from Shōgaku Ekidō. He served as the 66th Chief Abbot of Eiheiji Temple and the ninth Chief Administrator of the Sōtō Zen School. He also visited Thailand, India, China, Korea, and the United States, participating in events such as the Thai King's coronation ceremony and the San Francisco World Buddhist Conference. He devoted considerable effort to international Buddhist exchange.

The bold inscription reads “Dōgen tomo wo kaesu” (道源為帰友) — a phrase expressing the spirit of returning to the true Way and cherishing spiritual friendship. Mokusen’s brushwork is vigorous yet controlled, embodying the immediacy and clarity characteristic of Zen calligraphy. The scroll retains its traditional mounting and comes with a wooden storage box. The inscription label on the box indicates long-term preservation by previous owners. A refined example of Zen writing, suitable for collectors of Japanese calligraphy, Buddhist art, and meditative interior spaces.
