This scroll comes with an appraised box inscribed by Kono Taitsu 河野太通, a disciple of Yamada Mumon and the former Chief Abbot (Kanchō) of the Myōshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism.

水月倶悠々 Suigetsu Tomoni Yuyu
As the reflections of the moon on the water’s surface appear serene and undisturbed, this phrase comes to symbolise a calm and composed state of mind, untroubled by worldly concerns.

山田無文 Yamada Mumon (1900-1988)
Yamada Mumon was a Rinzai school roshi, calligrapher, and former abbot of Shofuku-ji in Kobe, Japan. Mumon was also the former head of the Myoshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Japan. His most prominent student (and Dharma heir) is Harada Shodo of Sogen-ji, an influential master in both Japan and the United States.
