十時梅厓 Tokito Baigai (1749-1804)
A nanga painter of the mid-Edo period. A Confucian scholar, he was also skilled in calligraphy and seal-engraving. He studied sutra studies (mainly classical studies) under Ito Tōshō and calligraphy under Otani Ei'an and Cho Tōsai. He had close contact with Ike Taiga, Kimura Kenkado and Minagawa Kien, and learnt painting techniques from Taiga.

Rendered in soft, atmospheric ink tones, this kakejiku presents a tranquil mountain landscape where towering peaks, mist, and water harmonize around a lone figure seated beside a stream, absorbed in playing the koto. The contrast between the rugged vertical cliffs and the quiet human presence creates a contemplative rhythm, inviting the viewer into a world shaped by solitude and scholarly refinement. The brushwork shifts gracefully from bold, textured strokes in the rocks to delicate lines in the trees and distant ridges, giving the composition both depth and poetic restraint.
