Azuma Kudari, or "Journey to the East," is a famous episode from The Tales of Ise, a classic Japanese literary work from the Heian period (794–1185). It tells the story of a nobleman, traditionally identified as Ariwara no Narihira, who leaves Kyoto and travels eastward with his companions, passing through beautiful landscapes along the way.

土佐光成 Tosa Mitsunari (1647-1710)
Born in Kyoto, he was the eldest son of 土佐光起 Tosa Mitsuoki (1617-1691). He succeeded his father as Edokoro-azukari, serving as an official court painter and undertaking painting commissions for the Imperial Palace and the Retired Emperor’s Palace.
