松坂帰庵 Matsuzaka Kian (1891-1959)
Shingon Buddhist monk of the Showa period. Born in Okayama Prefecture. He was the abbot of Hokai-in Temple of the Shingon sect. He excelled in calligraphy, painting, tanka poetry, and pottery. He devoted himself to the restoration and arrangement of the 13-story stone pagoda and bell tower. His character was always elegant and virtuous, and he was called "Ima Ryokan 良寛" (meaning "present Ryokan").

This kakejiku presents a tanka by Matsuzaka Kian (1891–1959), written in his characteristically gentle, unhurried hand: “In the evening, I feel a melancholy pang at the fallen leaves in the valley. As if begging for a farewell gift, they still linger as though refusing to leave.” The brushwork moves with a quiet rhythm, neither hurried nor ornamental, allowing the poem’s soft sadness to settle naturally into the space. A small ink motif placed beside the verse adds a moment of stillness, like a single leaf caught before touching the ground.
