菅茶山 Kan Chazan (1748-1827)
Kan Chazan was a distinguished Japanese Confucian scholar, classical Chinese poet, calligrapher, and educator of the late Edo period. Born in Bingo Province (present-day Hiroshima Prefecture), he became one of the most celebrated intellectual figures of his time. He established a private academy known as Renjuku, where he devoted himself to education and the study of Confucian philosophy. He was also closely associated with Rai Sanyo (1780–1832), the renowned historian and scholar. Chazan was particularly admired for his classical Chinese poetry, which expressed the beauty of nature, rural life, and everyday human experiences with elegance and simplicity. His celebrated poetry collection, Kōyō Sekiyō Sonsha Shi, was widely read during the Edo period. His calligraphy reflects his profound literary knowledge and scholarly refinement, making his surviving works important examples of Japan's Edo-period literati culture.
