He was a Japanese painter active through the Taishō and Shōwa periods and an important figure in the development of modern Nanga. Born in Imabari, Ehime, under the name Yano Tamio, he studied under Komuro Suiun and later absorbed the artistic spirit of Tomioka Tessai, shaping a style that blended literati ideals with a more modern expressive sensibility. His work is characterized by fluid brushwork, expansive compositions, and a balance of poetic restraint and dynamic movement—qualities that reflect both classical Nanga traditions and the evolving aesthetics of early 20th‑century Japan. Tetsuzan played a central role in the Kansai Nanga community, contributing to major institutions such as the Japan Nanga Institute, the Kenkonsha, and later the All Japan Ink Painting Association, while remaining a respected presence in national exhibitions throughout his career.
