Kawai Shusai 河合聚斎

河合聚斎 Kawai Shusai (active 1868-1912)
Kawai Shusai was a Japanese painter active during the Meiji period (1868–1912). His name appears in Dai Nihon Kaiga Chomei Omitate (1902), a historical ranking of prominent Japanese painters, confirming his recognition within the artistic community of the time. His works include traditional Japanese paintings depicting historical figures and cultural subjects. One of his documented works, Kusunoki Masashige Answering the Imperial Summons (1895), is held in the collection of the Kyoto City University of Arts Art Museum and was featured in a museum exhibition in 2024.
