Mochiduki Gyokusen 望月玉川
望月玉川 Mochiduki Gyokusen (1794-1852)
Born in Kyoto in Kansei 6, the son of Mochizuki Gyokusen 望月玉仙, the second generation painter of the Mochizuki school. His father died early in the following year, Kansei 7. He studied painting under Murakami Toshu 村上東洲 and later Ganku 岸駒. He then spent some time in Nagasaki before going to Edo (now Tokyo), where he was taught by Tani Buncho 谷文晁, a painter of the Shijo school. He excelled in landscape, flower, and bird paintings with an emotional style that incorporated the Kishi and Shijo schools in addition to the Mochizuki school, his family's style.
