Nagai Koho 永井香圃
永井香圃 Nagai Koho (1839-1911)
He was a Japanese painter active during the late Edo and Meiji periods. He specialized in Nanga (Southern School painting), a traditional style of Japanese literati painting inspired by Chinese art, and was particularly known for his landscape paintings. Nanga painting emphasizes the beauty and atmosphere of nature, often depicting mountains, rivers, trees, and rocky landscapes through expressive brushwork and subtle variations of ink. Rather than focusing solely on realistic representation, this artistic tradition seeks to convey tranquility, poetic beauty, and the spiritual essence of the natural world. Koho belonged to this tradition of literati painting, preserving its classical artistic ideals during the Meiji period, when Japanese art was undergoing significant modernization.
