Tawaraya Sotatsu 俵屋宗達
俵屋宗達 Tawaraya Sotatsu (active 1630)
A painter of the early Edo period. His family name was Nonomura, his given name was Ietsu, his courtesy name was Inen and his artist’s name was Taiseiken. He ran a workshop known as ‘Tawaraya’ and, in collaboration with Honami Kōetsu, produced masterpieces of bold and decorative Yamato-e and ink wash painting, including the ‘Folding Screens Depicting the Wind and Thunder Gods’ and the ‘Folding Screens Depicting Scenes from The Tale of Genji’.
