Minamoto No Yoshiie (1039-1106), also known as Hachimantaro, was a Minamoto clan samurai of the late Heian period, and Chinjufu-shogun (Commander-in-chief of the defense of the North).
勿来関 Nakosonoseki
Nakoso means "Don't come" in ancient words, Seki means a pass or gate. This artwork depicts the scene of Minamoto no Yoshiie, skilled in waka poetry, passing through Nakoso-no-Seki during his journey to the north after defeating Kiyohara no Takehira in the Gosannen War. Nakoso-no-Seki, along with Shirakawa-no-Seki and Nezugaseki, is renowned as one of the three ancient checkpoints of the Ou region. A classic motif shows Yoshiie on horseback, gazing up at the falling cherry blossoms as he passes through Nakoso-no-Seki. The waka poem composed by Minamoto no Yoshiie while passing through Nakoso-no-Seki is as follows: 'Though I think of Nakoso-no-Seki as the place that halts the wind, still the path is strewn with falling mountain cherry blossoms.' (Senzai-shu, No. 103)
