山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888) Date: July 1868 (Meiji 1) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / 千客萬来 (Senkyaku Banrai) One Lines Calligraphy with Box RF273

千客萬来 (Senkyaku Banrai)
“Senkaku Banrai” (千客万来) literally means “a thousand guests and ten thousand visitors,” expressing the idea of a continuous flow of customers. It is considered an auspicious phrase, particularly for merchants and businesses, symbolizing prosperity and success. Yamaoka Tesshu was known for his generosity in creating calligraphy and is said to have gladly written works whenever someone requested them. Therefore, it is possible that this calligraphy was written at the request of a merchant, perhaps as a wish for a thriving and prosperous business. Interestingly, although Tesshu sometimes received money in return for his calligraphy, he reportedly never kept it for himself. Instead, he would immediately give it away to poor and needy people. As a result of his extraordinary generosity and selflessness, he is said to have lived much of his life in extreme poverty despite his fame and reputation.

山岡鉄舟 Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888)
A famous samurai of the Bakumatsu period, who played an important role in the Meiji Restoration. The founder of the Itto Shoden Muto-ryu school of swordsmanship. Brother-in-law of Takahashi Deishu. Together with Katsu Kaishu and Takahashi Deishu, he is known as one of the Three Shu (Sanshu) of the Bakumatsu Period. During the Boshin War, he met Saigo Takamori as an emissary of Katsu Kaishu and paved the way for the opening of Edo Castle. He mastered the three arts of swordsmanship, Zen, and calligraphy. It is said that he wrote a million sheets of calligraphy during his lifetime because he never refused to write if people asked him to.
