藤田苔巌 Fujita Taigan (1863-1928)
Born in 1863 in Sanuki (Kagawa prefecture) as the eldest son of painter Fujita Taiseki. Studied painting with his father, Chinese studies with Fujisawa Nangaku, and further developed his painting skills with Wang Ji bai. He was particularly good at landscape painting. More than a dozen sliding door paintings remain at Kosho-ji Temple in Kanonji, Kagawa Prefecture.

Shrouded in drifting mist and framed by steep cliffs, this hanging scroll by Fujita Taigan (1863–1928) unfolds a landscape where bamboo clings to rocky ledges and a waterfall descends toward a quiet river below. Taigan’s command of ink tone—shaped by early training under his father Fujita Taiseki, classical study with Fujisawa Nangaku, and further refinement under Wang Jibai—gives the mountains a layered depth that feels both atmospheric and precise. The small boat gliding across the water introduces a human presence that heightens the sense of scale and solitude, a hallmark of Taigan’s landscape work. His seals, “Fujita Shun” and “Taigan,” affirm the authorship, while the accompanying box completes the piece’s traditional presentation. A refined example of Taigan’s ability to merge Chinese‑influenced brushwork with the lyrical sensibility of Meiji‑period Japanese painting.
