春木南溟 Haruki Nanmei (1795-1878) Japanese art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Dragon Crossing Over Mount Fuji RE270

春木南溟 Haruki Nanmei (1795-1878)
Nanga artist of the late Edo and Meiji periods. Eldest son of Haruki Nanko. He learned nanga from his father, Nanko, and further learned painting techniques by imitating masterpieces of the Song and Yuan dynasties. He excelled in landscape and flower-and-bird paintings.

with signature and seal 'Nanmei' 南溟

Emerging from a veil of mist and cloud, this evocative hanging scroll depicts a powerful dragon ascending through the atmosphere before Mount Fuji, a composition rich in symbolic resonance and visual tension, executed by Haruki Nanmei (1795–1878), a distinguished nanga artist active from the late Edo into the Meiji period and the eldest son of Haruki Nanko; Nanmei refined his expressive brushwork through deep study of Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty masterpieces, a background clearly reflected in the dynamic ink modulation and the controlled yet lively movement of the dragon as it cuts through swirling clouds, while Mount Fuji appears calm and immovable beneath, embodying permanence against transformation; the contrast between the dragon’s coiled energy and the mountain’s silent dignity creates a dramatic spatial rhythm characteristic of literati painting, inviting contemplation rather than spectacle; the work bears Nanmei’s signature and seal, confirming authorship, and stands as a compelling example of late Edo nanga that bridges classical Chinese ideals with a distinctly Japanese sense of atmosphere and narrative, making it an impressive and meaningful piece for collectors of dragon iconography, Mount Fuji imagery, or literati-inspired Japanese painting.
