松林桂月 Matsubayashi Keigetsu (1876-1963)
Japanese painter. Born in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. His real name is Atsushi. His wife, Matsubayashi Settei, is also a Japanese painter. He is often referred to as ‘the last literati painter,’ and his work is characterised by meticulous and straightforward depictions rooted in the tradition of Watanabe Kazan and Tsubaki Chinzan, while fully incorporating the popular style of modern sketching. His work is distinguished by a refined style underpinned by his knowledge of Chinese classics and poetry.

Age: 1924 Spring / 甲子春
with signature 'Keigetsu Sanjin' 桂月山人 and seal 'Atushi' 篤

Painted in the spring of 1924, this hanging scroll by Matsubayashi Keigetsu (1876–1963) presents a quietly contemplative still life that embodies the spirit of modern literati painting at its most refined. Keigetsu, born in Hagi in Yamaguchi Prefecture and often described as the last great bunjin painter, combined a deep grounding in the classical traditions of Watanabe Kazan and Tsubaki Chinzan with a clear, sketch-based approach suited to the modern era. In this work, camellias arranged in a simple vase are depicted with understated brushwork and subtle washes, allowing form, space, and rhythm to speak with calm restraint rather than ornament. The gentle dialogue between image and calligraphy reflects the artist’s lifelong engagement with Chinese poetry and classical learning, lending the composition an air of quiet intellect and seasonal elegance. Signed “Keigetsu Sanjin” and sealed, the scroll is dated to the artist’s mature period and is accompanied by its original tomobako, making it an evocative and well-balanced example of early 20th-century Japanese literati aesthetics, particularly well suited to a tea room or contemplative interior.
