やふかけのたにのおちはに物けなして まひないくれと未たにのこるも
In the evening, I feel a melancholy pang at the fallen leaves in the valley. As if begging for a farewell gift, they still linger as though refusing to leave.
松坂帰庵 Matsuzaka Kian (1891-1959)
Shingon Buddhist monk of the Showa period. Born in Okayama Prefecture. He was the abbot of Hokai-in Temple of the Shingon sect. He excelled in calligraphy, painting, tanka poetry, and pottery. He devoted himself to the restoration and arrangement of the 13-story stone pagoda and bell tower. His character was always elegant and virtuous, and he was called "Ima Ryokan 良寛" (meaning "present Ryokan").
with signature and seal 'Kian' 帰庵
This kakejiku presents a tanka by Matsuzaka Kian (1891–1959), written in his characteristically gentle, unhurried hand: “In the evening, I feel a melancholy pang at the fallen leaves in the valley. As if begging for a farewell gift, they still linger as though refusing to leave.” The brushwork moves with a quiet rhythm, neither hurried nor ornamental, allowing the poem’s soft sadness to settle naturally into the space. A small ink motif placed beside the verse adds a moment of stillness, like a single leaf caught before touching the ground. Kian, a Shingon monk known for his refined temperament and artistic versatility, brings the same clarity found in his temple work and poetry to this scroll, giving the piece an atmosphere that feels contemplative without being heavy. The signature and seal “Kian” (帰庵) affirm the artist’s hand. When displayed, the scroll introduces a gentle, reflective mood to the room, the lingering presence of the poem settling in much like the last leaves that remain in the valley at dusk.
