松浦天龍 Matsuura Tenryu (b1856)
A Japanese-style painter from Nagano Prefecture. His given name was Shotaro. His courtesy names were Gan and Kanao. His alternative pseudonyms were Kenzan and Shotogen. He studied under Fukushima Ryūho and Taki katei. He specialised in landscape and flower-and-bird paintings.

Emerging from the quiet elegance of early Taishō‑period brushwork, this landscape scroll by Matsuura Tenryu (b.1856) presents a serene view of bare trees, distant mountains, and a small bridge crossing a gentle river. Tenryu, a painter from Nagano trained under Fukushima Ryūho and Taki Katei, was known for landscapes and flower‑and‑bird subjects rendered with clarity and poetic restraint. Here, his ink tones shift softly from light mist to deeper shadows, guiding the eye through a scene that feels both spacious and intimately observed. The signature “Tenryu” (天龍) and the seal “Tenryu ga in” affirm the artist’s hand, with the date March 1912 (Taishō 1) noted on the work. When displayed, the scroll introduces a sense of calm distance into the room—an atmosphere where the viewer can almost feel the cool air along the riverbank—making the surrounding space feel more open, reflective, and quietly grounded.
