奥原晴湖 Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913) Japanese art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Suiboku Ink Sansui Mountain Landscapes Lake and Wise Man Crossing Bridge RE314

奥原晴湖 Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913)
A female nanga artist of the Meiji era. At first, she studied painting under 牧田水石 Hirata Suiseki (1796-1869), later studied Ming and Qing painting in Edo, and became a private admirer of Zheng Banqiao (Zheng Xie). She painted with a manly and vigorous style, and her popularity was split in two with 安田老山 Yasuda Rozan (1830-1883) at the time of the popularity of literati painting in the early Meiji period. She was a woman of many anecdotes about her masculine appearance and personality, including her decision to cut her hair, which was unusual at the time.

with signature 'Seiko' 晴湖

This kakejiku presents a refined suiboku landscape by Okuhara Seiko (1837–1913), a leading female nanga painter of the Meiji era. Rugged mountains rise in layered ink washes, their forms softened by mist, while a small figure crosses a bridge below, adding a quiet human presence to the vastness of the scene. The brushwork carries Seiko’s characteristic strength—bold, masculine strokes balanced with delicate modulations of tone—reflecting her deep study of Ming and Qing literati painting and her admiration for Zheng Banqiao. The composition unfolds with a calm, contemplative rhythm, inviting the viewer into a landscape that feels both remote and intimately observed. The signature “Seiko” (晴湖) affirms the artist’s hand. When displayed, the scroll brings a sense of spacious stillness into the room, the kind of quiet depth that gently shifts the atmosphere and makes the surrounding space feel more open and reflective, as if the viewer were stepping into the same mountain path.
