池大雅 Ike no Taiga (1723-1776)
A literati painter of the mid-Edo period. He studied Chinese Nanga painting, then adopted the painting techniques of traditional Japanese painting schools such as the Rimpa school and Western painting styles to establish the free-spirited and individualistic Taiga style. Together with Yosa Buson, he is regarded as the greatest exponent of Japanese nanga. He also excelled in calligraphy.
