渡辺崋山 Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841)
Japanese painter, scholar, and statesman member of the samurai class. From a young age, Kazan aspired to become a painter in order to earn a living. While fighting poverty, he studied Confucianism and painting. He was heavily influenced by the artistic styles of the West, forming a unique style with elements of Japanese and European art.

Age: 1838 May (Lunar calendar) / 戊戌五月
with signature 'Kazan' 崋山 and seal 'Watanabe Teisei' 渡邉定静 'Shian' 子安

This evocative hanging scroll by Watanabe Kazan (1793–1841), dated May 1838 (戊戌五月), presents a contemplative sansui (landscape) scene titled “Autumn Vertically Rising Mountain and Hermitage”. The composition features a steep, towering peak rendered with dynamic brushwork, rising sharply into the mist—symbolizing solitude, resilience, and the vertical aspiration of the scholar’s spirit. Nestled within the terrain, a quiet hermitage suggests retreat, reflection, and harmony with nature. Kazan, a samurai-class painter and scholar, was known for blending Japanese literati aesthetics with Western realism, creating works that resonate with both philosophical depth and technical precision. His signature “Kazan” (崋山) and seals “Watanabe Teisei” (渡邉定静) and “Shian” (子安) affirm the scroll’s authenticity. This piece is accompanied by an appraisal box by Watanabe Kaseki (1852–1930), adding historical provenance and scholarly recognition. The scroll stands as a testament to Kazan’s unique artistic vision and his enduring legacy in Japanese art and intellectual history.
