Born 1868 in Wakayama, Japan, he left for Osaka in 1878 to study under the ukiyo-e artist and painter Mitani Sadahiro. Later studied under Suzuki Shonen, who was at the centre of the modern Kyoto art world. He was active in the production of screen paintings for the imperial household and paintings dedicated to Meiji Shrine and other shrines.

The pair of scrolls by Yukawa Shodō (1868–1955) unfolds like two seasons in conversation—spring’s gentle brightness set against the quiet depth of autumn. Trained first under Mitani Sadahiro and later under Suzuki Shōnen at the center of the Kyoto art world, Shodō developed a style that blends narrative warmth with the refined clarity of modern Kyoto painting. In the spring scene, figures gather by the water beneath blooming trees, their boat resting at the shore as mist softens the distant mountains. The autumn counterpart shifts to richer tones: red foliage, a cascading waterfall, and two figures seated on a cliffside, absorbed in calm exchange. Both works carry Shodō’s characteristic balance of atmosphere and detail, signed “Shodō hitsu” (松堂筆) with seals including “Yukawa Ai” (湯川愛) and “Rakuju” (楽壽). Displayed together, the pair creates a gentle rhythm in the room—an ebb and flow between renewal and reflection—giving the space a sense of movement across the year, as if the viewer were quietly passing through the landscapes themselves. The set comes with its box and has been carefully preserved.
