牧櫻山 Maki Ozan (active 1890-1930) Japanese art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Heron by Water in Moonlit Night with Box RE492

牧櫻山 Maki Ōzan (active 1890-1930)
Japanese painter active from the late Meiji period into the early Shōwa era, known for his work in Nanga (literati painting), landscapes, and bird‑and‑flower subjects. Although detailed biographical records are scarce, he is believed to have been born in Hita, Ōita Prefecture, and early works signed “Ōzan Minoru” suggest a long period of artistic development. Ōzan’s paintings are appreciated for their refined brushwork, soft color tones, and poetic atmosphere—qualities associated with the Japanese literati tradition. His works appeared in contemporary artist listings of the time, indicating that he enjoyed a certain level of recognition within the Nanga community. Today, his scrolls remain valued for their elegant composition and classical sensibility.

with signature 'Ozan' 櫻山 and seal 'Maki Minoru in' 牧實印

A quiet, moonlit stillness settles over this elegant painting by Maki Ōzan (active 1890–1930), where a solitary heron stands poised at the water’s edge beneath the soft glow of a full moon. Known for his refined brushwork and poetic sensibility within the Nanga tradition, Ōzan captures the delicate balance between light, shadow, and silence—qualities that defined his landscapes and bird‑and‑flower subjects. The gentle gradation of the sky, the faint mist drifting across the water, and the heron’s calm posture create a scene that feels both intimate and timeless. Signed “Ōzan” (櫻山) with the seal “Maki Minoru in” (牧實印), the work reflects the painter’s subtle command of tone and atmosphere. Placed in a room, the scroll introduces a soft, nocturnal calm—the kind of quiet presence that naturally slows the pace of the space, giving the viewer a momentary sense of breathing room, as if the moonlit water were extending its stillness outward. The piece comes with its box and has been carefully preserved.
