児玉希望 Kodama Kibo (1898-1971)
A Japanese-style painter from Hiroshima Prefecture. His given name was Shōzō. After studying under Otake Chikuha, he became a pupil of Kawai Gyokudō in 1918. The pseudonym “Kibō” (Hope) was bestowed upon him by Chikuha. Together with Shiratori Eisetsu and others who studied under Itō Shinsui, he founded the Nichigetsu-sha group. Among the pupils at his painting school were Satō Taisei, Okuda Gensō, and Funamizu Norio.

with signature and seal 'kibo' 希朢

A refined hand-painted hanging scroll depicting a tranquil autumn scene of wild geese resting among softly bending reeds, rendered with exceptional delicacy and restraint on silk; the composition balances spacious negative ground with finely observed detail, allowing the gentle movement of grasses and the calm presence of the geese to evoke seasonal quietude and poetic stillness, qualities long associated with classical Japanese bird-and-flower painting. The subtle tonal gradations and controlled brushwork create a serene atmosphere well suited to both traditional alcove display and contemporary interiors. The work bears the signature and seal of Kodama Kibō, a highly respected Nihonga painter active in the early to mid-20th century. The scroll is mounted in an elegant format with wooden roller ends and is preserved with its original tomobako storage box; as with all antique works, there are age-related signs such as light creases, minor stains, and small imperfections, which are consistent with its age and should be appreciated as part of its historical character—please refer carefully to the photographs for overall condition.
