田崎草雲 Tazaki Soun (1815-1898)
Japanese nanga painter. First name Un-芸 . Characters are Soun-草雲. His disciples include Komuro Suiun and Su Gakudo. He was the model for Tayama Hakuun, a wandering painter from Ashikaga who appears in Shiba Ryotaro's short story ‘Kenka Soun’ and Nakazato Kusan's full-length novel ‘Daibosatsu Touge'.

This atmospheric hanging scroll by Tazaki Soun (1815–1898), dated Autumn 1892 (明治壬辰秋日), depicts the classical theme of Red Cliff Landscape (赤壁山水)—a subject inspired by Su Shi’s celebrated Ode to the Red Cliff. The scene shows a small boat gliding along a quiet river beneath towering cliffs and autumn foliage, evoking the poetic mood of reflection, impermanence, and harmony with nature that defines the Red Cliff tradition. Soft brushwork and gentle ink tones create a sense of depth and calm, capturing the literati ideal of finding philosophical insight within the landscape. Lightly echoing Soun’s background as a leading nanga painter of the Meiji period, the scroll bears the signature “Soun sō” (草雲叟) and seal “Hakuseki Sanbō” (白石山房).
