小村大雲 Omura Taiun (1883-1938)
From childhood, he excelled in painting. At sixteen, he ran away from home to seek admission to the studio of Hashimoto Gahō, but was refused due to his parents' lack of consent and was forced to return home. At eighteen, through the assistance of the chief priest of Gakuen-ji Temple, he went to Kyoto and entered the studio of Morikawa Sōbun. He changed his artistic name to Hōbun-豊文. Around the age of nineteen, he transferred to the studio of Hashimoto Ryōka and changed his name to Taiun-大雲. The following year, he entered the studio of Tōji Kako. At the age of 22, he became a pupil of Yamamoto Shunkyo, winning prizes in numerous exhibitions. He subsequently served as a judge for the Imperial Exhibition until his later years.
