Kobayashi Issa was a Japanese poet and lay Buddhist priest of the Jodo Shinshu. He is regarded as one of the four haiku masters in Japan, along with Basho, Buson, and Shiki - "the Great Four."

This Japanese hanging scroll beautifully brings together a gentle haiku attributed to Kobayashi Issa and an expressive ink painting of windswept pine trees. Beside the poem appears the inscription “Sotogahama” (外ヶ濱)—an old coastal place name in northern Japan, long known as a landscape where migrating geese arrive in autumn. This reference provides a clear sense of setting, evoking a quiet northern shoreline where sea wind, migrating birds, and slender pines create a serene and poetic atmosphere.
The haiku reads:
“Here in Japan, dear migrating geese — may you sleep at ease.”
Issa’s characteristic warmth is fully present in this verse. He speaks with tenderness to the weary geese who have flown across the sea, inviting them to rest safely upon reaching Japan. The accompanying pine painting deepens this sense of calm.
