This is a rare and culturally significant set of three antique Japanese hanging scrolls (kakejiku), featuring collaborative works by three of the most celebrated haiku poets of the Edo period: Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694), Takarai Kikaku (1661–1707), and Hattori Ransetsu (1654–1707). Each scroll presents a poetic inscription (gasan) accompanied by a haiku attributed to the respective poet, rendered in expressive brushwork that reflects the literary and aesthetic sensibilities of early haikai tradition. Beneath each poem is a painted portrait of the poet, executed in a minimalist ink style. While the haiku and calligraphy are attributed to Bashō, Kikaku, and Ransetsu respectively, the portraits are unsigned and the artist remains unknown. The scrolls are mounted in traditional textile borders and preserved together in a shared original wooden box (tomobako), which enhances their historical coherence and value as a set. This ensemble offers a rare glimpse into the intersection of poetry, portraiture, and Edo-period literati culture. It is an exceptional acquisition for collectors of Japanese art, haiku literature, or antique calligraphy.
