浦上春琴 Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846)
Literary painter of the late Edo period. Born in Bizen (Okayama Prefecture) as the eldest son of Uragami Gyokudo. He traveled to Nagasaki and Kyoto, where he interacted with Rai Sanyo and Tanomura Chikuden. Unlike his father, he was known for his exquisite style of painting. He was specializing in flower-and-bird and landscape paintings. His style was clear and elegant. At the time, his works were more popular than those of his father Gyokudo.
with signature 'Suian Kisen' 睡菴紀選 and seal 'Kisen no in' 紀選之印 'Shunkin Koji' 春琴居士
This finely detailed hanging scroll presents a tranquil sansui (mountain-water) landscape by Uragami Shunkin (1779–1846), a prominent literati painter and calligrapher of the late Edo period. A leading figure in the Nanga (Southern School) tradition, Shunkin was deeply influenced by Chinese literati ideals and known for his poetic sensitivity and refined brushwork. The composition depicts a riverside village nestled among pine trees and forested hills, with distant mountains rising in mist. Executed with exceptional precision and subtle tonal gradation, the painting reflects Shunkin’s mastery of ink landscape and his philosophical engagement with nature. In East Asian aesthetics, sansui landscapes are not merely scenic depictions — they embody contemplative ideals, solitude, and harmony between humanity and the natural world. The pine tree, a symbol of resilience and longevity, anchors the scene with quiet dignity.
The scroll is accompanied by an appraised box bearing the seal and inscription of Shusen (秋泉), a recognized connoisseur or scholar, adding provenance and scholarly validation to the work. A superb example of Edo-period literati painting, ideal for collectors of Japanese ink landscapes and Nanga tradition.
