This scroll comes with an appraised box by Tanaka Hakuin 田中柏陰 (1866-1934).
雲谷等爾 Unkoku Toji (1615-1671)
Painter of the Unkoku school in the early Edo period. He was the second son of Unkoku Toeki. He was involved in the production of the paintings on the walls of the Imperial Palace together with his brother Unkoku Toyo. He was appointed Hokkyo in 1639.
田中柏陰 Tanaka Hakuin (1866-1934)
Born in Shizuoka. First name Keizaburo. At the age of 17, he went to Kyoto to study under Tanomura Chokunyu. He inherited the Nanga style of the Tanomura-Chikuden lineage and specialised in dark-coloured landscape painting. He took the name Tanaka Hakuin, opened a painting school, Gazendo, and taught many pupils. He later became a leading figure in the Kansai nanga world. Leading appraiser of the Chikuden lineage.
