This hanging scroll features the powerful Zen phrase “Byojoshin Koredo” (平常心是道)—“Ordinary mind is the Way”—rendered in bold calligraphy by Suga Gendō (b. 1919), a respected figure associated with Daitoku-ji, one of Kyoto’s most prominent Zen temples. The phrase, drawn from classical Chan/Zen teachings, expresses the idea that enlightenment is found not in extremes, but in the calm clarity of everyday awareness.
