Painter from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. Studied the Kano and Tosa schools. In his later years, he also took up Western painting techniques and mastered a wide range of Japanese, Chinese, and Western painting styles. He specialized in historical paintings.

Softly emerging from a veil of mist, this hanging scroll—attributed to Kikuchi Yosai (1788–1878)—presents a tranquil vision of a hazy moon suspended above an understated landscape. The restrained palette and delicate modulation of tone echo Yosai’s versatility, shaped by his study of Kano and Tosa traditions as well as his later engagement with Western techniques.
