酒井抱一 Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828)
Painter of the late Edo period. Founder of the Edo Rimpa school. From his youth, he widely practiced haiku, kyoka, Noh, and tea ceremonies. He first studied the Kano school of painting, then the ukiyoe style from Utagawa Toyoharu, the Shin Nanpin style from So Shiseki, and the Maruyama school and Tosa schools, but later became deeply attached to Ogata Korin and Ogata Kenzan. He developed his own style of painting while inheriting the decorative style of the Rimpa school.

Framed in a richly decorative mounting, this kakejiku attributed to Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1828) presents Jurojin, the god of longevity, gazing upward toward a gracefully ascending crane. The pairing of deity and crane evokes auspicious themes central to Edo‑period painting—long life, wisdom, and the harmonious link between the earthly and the celestial. The soft coloration, rhythmic brushwork, and elegant spatial balance reflect the refined sensibility associated with Hōitsu, founder of the Edo Rimpa school and a painter deeply influenced by the decorative legacy of Ogata Kōrin and Kenzan. The inscription “Hōitsu Kishin hitsu” (抱一暉真筆) and the seals “Ōson” (鶯村) and “Bunsen” (文詮) appear on the work, aligning it with the stylistic and cultural lineage of late‑Edo Rimpa aesthetics. The scroll is accompanied by a preservation box, consistent with traditional storage practices for works of this type.
