with signature 'Gakusen' 學僊 and seal 'OKaku no in' 王鶴之印 'Gakusen' 學僊

This elegant hanging scroll presents a richly detailed kachō-ga (flower-and-bird painting) depicting cherry blossoms, magnolias, peonies, and two long-tailed birds, rendered with refined brushwork and harmonious color. The composition conveys both seasonal beauty and auspicious symbolism, with flowering plants representing renewal and prosperity, while the birds add movement and vitality to the scene. The work is by Ōba Gakusen (1820–1899), a painter active in the late Edo period known for his accomplished landscapes and bird-and-flower subjects, and is signed “Gakusen” (學僊) with seals including “Ōkaku no in” (王鶴之印). The accompanying storage box bears the title “Gyokudō Fukki” (玉堂富貴), an auspicious phrase associated with elegance and prosperity, and the scroll is preserved with its box, attesting to careful keeping. This is a fine example of Edo-period decorative painting, suitable for tokonoma display or a traditional Japanese art collection.
