里見雲嶺 Satomi Unrei (1849-1928)
Japanese painter active during the Meiji and Taisho periods, born 1849, Hiroshima. His first name was Kumajiro. He first studied the Shijo School under Nakai Tairei and later under Nishiyama Hoen. Unrei's painting style can be described as orthodox of the Shijo School, specialising in landscapes and portraits using traditional painting methods, but also working on a variety of subjects including real landscapes, flowers and birds, and animals. Ema (votive tablet) and ceiling paintings are found at Itsukushima Shrine and other shrines throughout Hiroshima.

A lively harmony of flowers and birds unfolds across this scroll by Satomi Unrei (1849–1928), a Shijō‑school painter active through the Meiji and Taishō eras. Trained under Nakai Tairei and later Nishiyama Hōen, Unrei developed a style rooted in classical technique yet sensitive to the rhythms of the natural world. Here, blossoms in full color rise against a warm background, while birds perch, flutter, and circle through the branches with a sense of effortless movement. At the water’s edge, two ducks glide quietly, grounding the composition with a gentle stillness. The work is signed “Unrei” (雲嶺) with seals including “Giryo” (義陵) and “Unrei”, and dated to late autumn of 1919 (Taishō 8). In a living space, the scroll brings a soft brightness that subtly enlivens the room—the interplay of color and motion creating a sense of freshness, as though a small pocket of seasonal vitality had settled indoors. The piece is accompanied by its original box (Tomobako) and has been carefully preserved.
