南口閑粋 Minamiguchi Kansui (b1958)
A ceramic artist born in Osaka Prefecture. From 1978, he studied under the first-generation Miyagawa Koun. In 1985, he began studying under the 16th-generation Eiraku Zengoro. In 1989, he established his own kiln and revived ‘Somayama-yaki’, a style that had been popular but had fallen into disuse in what is now Shiga Prefecture during the late Edo period. His work is characterised by a vibrant style that incorporates traditional Kyoto-yaki techniques.

The tea bowl by Minamiguchi Kansui, working in the revived Somayama‑yaki tradition, sets drooping wisteria blossoms in a Kenzan‑inspired arrangement, the purples, blues, and greens flowing in loose, confident brushwork that sits lightly atop the pale body; the touches of gold and the softly curving petals reflect his Kyoto‑yaki training under Miyagawa Kōun and Eiraku Zengorō XVI, while the seal “Kansui” anchors the piece within his vibrant, modern interpretation of Edo‑period decorative style, all kept together with its tomobako.
