降らずとも 竹植うる日は 蓑と笠
“Furazutomo take uuru hi wa mino to kasa”
(Even if it does not rain, on the day of planting bamboo, one should carry a rain cape and hat.)

This is an authentic haiku by Matsuo Bashō, expressing a practical life philosophy rather than pure poetic imagery. The verse teaches that even when circumstances appear favorable, one should always be prepared for change. It reflects Bashō’s deep understanding of everyday life and the uncertainties of nature, revealing him not only as a poet of refined aesthetics, but also as a thoughtful observer of human conduct. While highly valued in literary history, this poem is distinctive among Bashō’s works for conveying its meaning through calm insight rather than overt imagery, giving it a unique intellectual depth when interpreted in visual form.

松尾芭蕉 Matsuo Basho (1644-1694)
Haiku poet of the early Edo period. Born in Iga-Ueno. Formerly a member of the Todo clan of Iga-Ueno. He renounced his samurai status and entered the world of the townspeople. In Edo, he learned haikai of the Danrin school, etc., and later developed the haiku style of Sho (Basho style), which had "sabi", "shiori", "hosomi", etc. as its fundamental principles. He established haikai as an art form. He produced many excellent pupils, including the ten haiku poets of the Shomon school, and traveled to many places, leaving behind famous haiku and travelogues. Among his travelogues, "Okunohosomichi (Basho's Narrow Road)" is well known.

with signature 'Hasewo' はせを and seal 'Basho' 芭蕉 'Tosei' 桃青

This refined hanging scroll brings together poetry, painting, and connoisseurship in a single, quietly powerful work centered on the timeless image of bamboo and a celebrated haiku by Matsuo Bashō. The softly brushed bamboo, rising with calm strength from the paper, mirrors the spirit of the verse written beside it, creating a visual rhythm in which word and image gently reinforce one another. The poem, “Furazutomo take uuru hi wa mino to kasa” (Even if it does not rain, on the day of planting bamboo, one should carry a rain cape and hat), speaks of foresight and steady wisdom, and its pairing with bamboo — a symbol of resilience and renewal — gives the message a deeper, more contemplative resonance. The scroll further gains authority through the inclusion of a kiwamefuda by Kohitsu Ryōchū, an Edo-period calligraphy connoisseur, confirming the authenticity of the work and adding an important layer of historical trust. Bearing Bashō’s signature “Hasewo” and seals “Bashō” and “Tōsei,” and preserved with its certificate and box, this piece stands as a rare and harmonious fusion of literature, painting, and classical appraisal, offering collectors an artwork valued not only for its beauty but also for its cultural depth.
