松村呉春 Matsumura Goshun (1752-1811)
Painter of the middle to late Edo period. Founder of the Shijo School. He first studied painting under 大西酔月 Onishi Suigetsu (?-1772), but after Shizuki's death, he became a student of 与謝蕪村 Yosa Buson (1716-1784) and learned haikai and painting. He left behind powerful portraits and flower-and-bird paintings in the style of Buson, and many excellent haiga as well. After Buson's death, he studied under 円山応挙 Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) and turned to realistic painting. He created the Shijo School, which is characterized by its elegant painting style and fusion of Nanga and Maruyama schools. His poetic sketching was light and easy to understand, and became the mainstream of the Kyoto art world.
with signature and seal 'Goshun' 呉春
This exquisite pair of hanging scrolls by Matsumura Goshun (1752–1811) presents a poetic dialogue between celestial elements: the Rising Sun and the Moon. Rendered with minimalist elegance, each scroll features a luminous orb—one in warm crimson, the other in soft silver-grey—hovering above a solitary figure or symbolic motif. The restrained composition and subtle tonal shifts evoke a sense of seasonal transition, spiritual contemplation, and timeless rhythm. Goshun, founder of the Shijō School, was known for blending the lyrical sensibility of Yosa Buson with the realism of Maruyama Ōkyo, creating a style that was both refined and accessible. These scrolls reflect that synthesis: the sun and moon are not just natural phenomena but metaphors for yin and yang, presence and absence, or awakening and reflection—core themes in Edo-period aesthetics. Each scroll bears the signature and seal “Goshun” (呉春), and the set is accompanied by an appraised box by Ishikawa Yurin (1870–1952), adding historical validation and scholarly provenance. Together, they form a serene and balanced ensemble, ideal for display in a tea room or contemplative space.
