熊野焼 Kumano ware
Kumano ware is produced at the Kumano-yaki Kado-gama kiln in Kumano-cho, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The area is home to ancient kiln ruins dating back to around the 7th century and has long been known as a source of high-quality pottery clay. The craft was revived in this historic locale when Saragai Zenzaemon established a kiln there. The pottery is characterized by a rustic, heartwarming style, with products ranging from tea bowls and guinomi (sake cups) to tokkuri (sake flasks).
皿谷実 Saragai Minoru (b1941)
A ceramic artist who carries on the tradition of "Kumano-yaki" ware from Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. After graduating from the Ceramics Department of the Kyoto City College of Fine Arts in 1964, he studied under masters such as Tomimoto Kenkichi and Kondo Yuzo. He has exhibited his work and won numerous awards at exhibitions both in Japan and abroad.
